Undergraduate progression

The College follows the University Assessment Procedures described within the Handbook for Assessment, Progression and Awards: Taught Programmes.

Progression from Stage 1 to Stage 2

In order to progress from Stage 1 to Stage 2, the following criteria must be met:

  • A credit weighted average mark of 40% or more in the 120 credits studied at Stage 1,
  • The passing of at least 90 credits at Stage 1, and
  • The fulfilment of any additional requirements of the programme specification and of the professional accrediting institution.

External Examiners will not normally be involved in the Stage 1 assessment process, except where consulted for advice in cases of failure.

The marks achieved in Stage 1 will not be taken into account in determining classification of any final award made in relation to the programme.

Students proceeding on MEng/BEng may choose a discipline specialisation following successful completion of stage 1 (Civil & Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Engineering & Management, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering).

Progression from Stage 2 to Stage 3

In order to progress from Stage 2 to Stage 3, the following criteria must be met:

  • A credit weighted average mark of 40% or more in the 120 credits studied at Stage 2,
  • The passing of at least 90 credits at Stage 2, and
  • The fulfilment of any additional requirements of the programme specification and of the professional accrediting institution.

External Examiners are involved in the Stage 2 assessment process.

The marks achieved in Stage 2 will be taken into account in determining classification of any final award made in relation to the programme.

To proceed to Stage 3 of the MEng programme, candidates must normally have achieved at least 2:1 level (60%) over the first two years (the average being weighted first year 40%, second year 60%). For MEng candidates who successfully achieve the general progression requirement for the Stage 2 assessment but who do not achieve the requisite credit weighted average mark for progression to Stage 3 of the MEng programme, a recommendation will be made to Faculty Board for transfer to the equivalent 360 credit BEng programme (with entry to Stage 3 in the subsequent academic year).

Progression from Stage 3 to Stage 4 (MEng)

In order to progress from Stage 3 to Stage 4, the following criteria must be met:

  • A credit weighted average mark of 40% or more in the 120 credits studied at Stage 3,
  • The passing of at least 90 credits at Stage 3, and
  • The fulfilment of any additional requirements of the programme specification and of the professional accrediting institution.

External Examiners are involved in the Stage 3 assessment process.

The marks achieved in Stage 3 will be taken into account in determining classification of any final award made in relation to the programme.

Summative Assessment (BEng)

Award of a BEng Honours degree in the Summative Assessment requires:

  • A credit weighted average mark of 40% or more in the 120 credits studied in Stage 3,
  • The passing of at least 90 credits at the final Stage (Stage 3), and
  • The fulfilment of any additional requirements of the programme specification and of the professional accrediting institution.

External Examiners are involved in the Stage 3 assessment process.

The marks achieved in Stage 3 will be taken into account in determining classification of any final award made in relation to the programme.

Summative Assessment (BEng) - Professional Accreditation Requirements

For the award of a BEng Honours degree in programmes accredited for CEng/IEng by the Institution of Engineering and Technology, by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, by the Joint Board of Moderators, and by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, in the final summative assessment, the Stage 3 Individual Project must be passed (with referral permitted).

Summative Assessment (MEng)

The award of a MEng Honours degree in the Summative Assessment requires:

  • A credit weighted average mark of 50% or more in the 120 credits studied in Stage 4,
  • The passing of at least 90 credits at the final Stage, and
  • The fulfilment of any additional requirements of the programme specification, and of the professional accrediting institution.

All candidates:

External Examiners are involved in the Stage 4 assessment process.

The marks achieved in Stage 4 will be taken into account in determining classification of any final award made in relation to the programme.

Summative Assessment – Professional Accreditation Requirements (MEng)

Classification requirements:

For MEng degrees accredited for CEng by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, candidates awarded a 2:2 or above will have met the criteria for an accredited MEng degree. A candidate who is awarded a MEng below 2:2 will be classed (by the IMechE) at the BEng (Hons) level for membership purposes of the IMechE.

Stage 3 Individual Project requirements:

For the award of an accredited MEng degree in programmes accredited for CEng by the Institution of Engineering and Technology, by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, by the Joint Board of Moderators, and by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, in the final summative assessment the Stage 3 Individual Project must be passed (with referral permitted).

Stage 4 Group Project requirements:

For the award of an accredited MEng degree in programmes accredited for CEng by the Institution of Engineering and Technology, by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, by the Joint Board of Moderators, and by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, in the final summative assessment, the Stage 4 Group Project must be passed (with referral permitted).

All decisions of the Assessment, Progression and Awarding Committee (APAC) are subject to approval by Faculty Board, and formal minutes will be kept of all meetings of APACs.
