2.5.1 Library facilities

The Library Service on Penryn Campus serves the needs of both the University of Exeter in Cornwall and Falmouth University. It is located on level 1 of The Exchange, and is open 24:7 during term time. Its collection has over 80,000 items including core textbooks, print and online journals, DVDs and maps relating to the subjects taught and researched at both Falmouth and Exeter. It also houses a multi-media collection, archive material from CSM as well as open access IT facilities. The Library helpdesk and IT helpdesk are both located on Level 1. Varied study spaces exist, including a silent study room, quiet and group study areas and bookable meeting rooms (click here for more info).

You can access a variety of electronic databases both on and remotely off campus. The Library Catalogue allows you to search and locate items. Loans can be renewed online, and holds or reservations placed through the Library Catalogue. Other electronic databases at your disposal include: Digimap Ordnance Survey / Geology, Web of Science, Geofacets, OneMine and Knovel Engineering. These are essential for locating relevant, up-to-date research and information for technical reports, projects or dissertations.

From the Penryn Campus Library, you also have access to the University of Exeter Library (Streatham), which provides a book chapter scanning service as well as regular inter-site loan services between Streatham and Penryn. You can also access the library and collections at the Falmouth Campus of Falmouth University.

An introduction to the Library service is provided for all new students and further specialist support is offered later in the year. One to one help is available via Info Perch; a twice weekly, drop in service and students can also use the Library Help desk or email library@fxplus.ac.uk. Within CSM, Dr. Ian Bailey is the Library Liaison Officer. He liaises with the Library on the development of resources.

CSM students have the opportunity to become a Library Champion. The Library Champion scheme is designed to get students more involved in Library matters, whilst offering them a chance to augment their CVs and develop their skills in advocacy, negotiation, budgeting and promotion. Library Champions across all Penryn-based disciplines share an annual pot of £10,000 that can be spent on library resources as they see fit. Click here for more information.

2.5.2 Exeter Learning Environment (ELE)

ELE is where you can find out everything about a module. You can access a module description, the module reading list, past theory exam papers, and literature resources. You can also download lecture slides and notes (to print prior to the lectures), practical class exercises and model answers. There may be online quizzes associated with some modules. You can access ELE from the University of Exeter homepage, then click on MyExeter and log in, or alternatively go to http://vle.exeter.ac.uk/.

2.5.3 Access to the Geology Teaching and Engineering Laboratories

You are encouraged to make use of the teaching resources available in the Engineering laboratory (Room 3.030) and Geology teaching laboratory (Room 3.028) for private study, even when the room is in use (if space allows). Access to these rooms is via your University swipe card. You will be given a form covering the terms and conditions of working in this room out of hours at the start of your degree in Welcome Week. If your card does not give you access to these rooms then report it to Info at Penryn, based in the Peter Lanyon Building.
