Apply online

The application process for students going abroad usually opens in November. For precise dates and to apply, please visit the Global Opportunities Outbound webpages. (Please note that the rule of a minimum 60% first year grade average does not apply to Modern Languages and Cultures students)

You will see that there are three steps to complete:

  • Check and add the personal information on the first page of the application;
  • Submit a maximum of eight choices of destinations in order of preference. You must include a list of the modules that you would like to study at each choice, so you will need to look at the website of each institution and choose from the modules available. Do not worry about the number of credits for each module at this point - just choose 4 per term/semester. These module choices are not set in stone but we suggest you record them as they will help you later in the process when you know which university you have been allocated to.
  • Modern Languages students can choose to split the year so please make sure that you state carefully whether you are applying for the first semester, the second semester or the full year. If you choose to split the year between two study placements, you will need to complete two applications. However, first please check the term dates of your chosen universities to make sure they do not clash.
  • Check the Terms and Conditions page and submit your application.

The online application must be submitted by the given deadline on the Global Opportunities Outbound webpages but until that deadline you will be able to log back on and amend your application. You will be told where you are going by February.

On rare occasions, it may not always be possible to allocate you any of the places you have chosen, but you would then be asked to give us further choices.

After the application process closes, you will need to attend further meetings where you will be given various documents to sign.

Please note that there is no advantage to handing in the form early - we will not judge the applications on a first-come first-served basis! So take your time filling out the application and make sure it's the best it can be.

Finally, please remember that all Modern Languages and Cultures students can apply for Study Abroad, as long as they have passed the first two years. However, the places at our partner universities are allocated in order of first-year grade average beginning with the students with the highest grades.
