The module has been designed to cater for the need of the exploration and mine geologist and for those geoscientists employed to investigate environmental and construction related issues.Syllabus plan
Exploration programmes and exploration geochemistry topics are taught by CJM; exploration geophysics by ANO Week 1: Organisation of the mining industry, exploration objectives, converting geological models into exploration programmes (ILOs 1,2, 8) Week 2: Remote Sensing (ILO 2) Exploration geochemistry Weeks 3-4: Introduction, geochemical sample preparation and analysis, analytical quality control (ILOs 2, 4) Weeks 5-6: Review of sampling methods; advantages/disadvantages of each technique. Soil and contaminated land sampling. Stream sediment/water sampling and acid rock drainage (ILOs 2, 4, 8). Week 7: Drilling and resource calculation, Value of a mineral deposit (ILOs 2, 3). Geophysics (ILOs 2, 5-7) Week 8: Exploration seismology. The principles, uses, instrumentation and method of refraction and reflection seismology. Uses of the techniques; important factors in the design of surveys and simple processing of data. Gravity. Instrumentation, corrections to survey data, interpretation of gravity anomaly data. Week 9: Resistivity. Instrumentation, data analysis and interpretation. The application of the techniques to groundwater exploration. Magnetic data. Instrumentation, data analysis and interpretation. Electromagnetic and electrical methods. Instrumentation, data analysis and interpretation. Methods covered will include induced polarisation and continuous electromagnetic methods.
