MODULE TITLEStructural Materials CREDIT VALUE15
MODULE CODEENG2200DA MODULE CONVENERProf Aleksandar Pavic (Coordinator)
DURATION: TERM 1 2 3
DURATION: WEEKS 4 0 0
Number of Students Taking Module (anticipated) 25
DESCRIPTION - summary of the module content

This module explores the materials used in civil engineering structures. You will revisit aspects of materials science to explore the behaviour of construction materials and extend your knowledge of properties relevant to design of infrastructure and buildings. During the module, you will complete a range of practical investigations into the current use of materials and use literature review techniques to identify emerging innovations. These will inform your conceptual design response to a group project, developing material specifications and estimating quantities for a structure and associated infrastructure.

This module encourages you to apply all the knowledge you have learned during your programme so far and gives you the confidence to merge these skills with new practice. Finally, the module will equip with skills to enhance conceptual design skills, enhance your knowledge of man-made and natural civil engineering materials and improve your understanding of construction health and safety issues.

Pre-requisite ENG1204DA Materials

AIMS - intentions of the module

The intentions of this module are to raise your awareness of the design process using common structural materials. It aims to give you knowledge of the manufacture and properties of man-made civil engineering materials, particularly for their use and suitability in construction. In addition, it teaches you the statutory obligations for safety incumbent on all those working in Civil Engineering.

INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES (ILOs) (see assessment section below for how ILOs will be assessed)
