Module description

"The Bird's Nest" Olympic stadium was a triumphant engineering project - but what were the design and construction methods behind this masterpiece? The case study element of this course explores civil engineering feats such as this; enhancing your industry design knowledge.

This module brings to life the civil engineering profession by practically introducing you to every aspect of construction management, analysing real design case studies and by taking a more advanced look at composite structure. An outstanding opportunity is also offered here to connect with industry via a student counselling scheme enabling you to interview mentors in their workplace.

In order to link with future engineering talent, companies such as ARUPS, Halcrow, Mouchell and South West Water open their doors and provide contact with their professional engineers to exchange knowledge; giving you the chance to make invaluable contacts for employment.

Prerequisite module: ECM2108, ECM2109, ECM3155, ECM3156, ECM3157 or equivalent

Module aims

By the end of this course you will have integrated the knowledge obtained from previous modules with new experience of construction management and further composite design. Completing the design case study project will also have improved your team-work, presentation skills and knowledge by exposing you to a variety of existing structures and engineering projects and enabling you to explore the conceptual design, materials, structural systems and problem-solving involved in their design and construction.

This module covers Specific Learning Outcomes in Engineering, which apply to accredited programmes at Bachelors/MEng/Masters level. These contribute to the educational requirements for CEng registration (as defined under the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence � UK-SPEC).

This module correlates to references U1, U3, E1, E2, D1, D4, S1 - S5, P5, MU2, MU4, ME2, MD1, MS2, MP1, MP2, GM3, GM4. These references are indices of the specific learning outcomes expected of Bachelors/MEng/Masters candidates set out in UK-SPEC, codified with reference to systems used by professional accrediting institutions.   • 2. comprehend the roles of the various professionals in construction, the contractual arrangements between them, and the reasons behind the adoption of various forms of contract;
  • 3. recognise a firm understanding of the issues of safety in construction;
  • 4. appreciate the requirements and priorities of civil engineering professionals and their professional institutions;
  • 5. demonstrate detailed design knowledge of a chosen type of civil engineering system or structure, with an understanding of different possible design scenarios;
  • 6. carry out structural work according to structural design codes.

  • 7. apply your engineering knowledge to the analysis and design of real systems and structures and to processes in construction.

  • 8. show improved small-group working skills, and presentation techniques;

Syllabus plan

selected institution lectures, lectures and workshops by visiting professors and other external speakers, career counselling by professional civil engineers;

- lectures on CDM, health and safety, construction contracts, site supervision and management;

- different contract types and relevance to project objectives;

- claims and variations under contract;

- case study on a major construction project, looking at design criteria, design principles, construction, safety and environmental considerations.

Re-assessment notes

If a module is normally assessed entirely by coursework, all referred/deferred assessments will normally be by assignment.

If a module is normally assessed by examination or examination plus coursework, referred and deferred assessment will normally be by examination. For referrals, only the examination will count, a mark of 40% being awarded if the examination is passed. For deferrals, candidates will be awarded the higher of the deferred examination mark or the deferred examination mark combined with the original coursework mark.
