Overview

Professor Jensen Li is a Professor of Computational Engineering and Metamaterials (Education and Research) at the University of Exeter within the Faculty of Environment, Science, and Economy, a position he took up in July 2024. Prior to this, he held a professorship in Physics at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). He has also served as a Senior Lecturer and Reader in Photonics at the School of Physics and Astronomy, University of Birmingham, and as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics and Materials Science at the City University of Hong Kong.

Professor Li is an elected member of The Hong Kong Young Academy of Sciences and was awarded the Croucher Senior Research Fellowship in 2022. He completed his postdoctoral research at the NSF Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center, UC Berkeley, from 2007 to 2009, and at the Blackett Laboratory, Imperial College London, from 2005 to 2007, supported by a postdoctoral fellowship from the Croucher Foundation. He earned his PhD in Physics in 2004 and his MPhil in Physics in 2000, both from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He received his BEng in Electrical and Electronic Engineering in 1998 from the University of Hong Kong.

Professor Li’s research focuses on a range of extraordinary optical phenomena enabled by metamaterials and photonic crystals, including notable examples such as invisibility cloaking and super-resolution imaging. His current interests encompass transformation optics, metasurfaces, non-Hermitian optics, and complex media. A significant recent direction in his work involves breaking traditional barriers in wave phenomena through two active approaches. The first approach exploits material gain and loss, known as non-Hermiticity, as an additional dimension. The second approach leverages the time dimension by dynamically tuning material properties in real-time, with modulation speeds comparable to signal frequencies. This method can break time-reversal symmetry, leading to significant non-reciprocal effects and other novel wave phenomena, collectively known as time-varying metamaterials.

His current goal is to develop the technologies required to construct metamaterials with both non-Hermiticity and time-varying capabilities. He aims to establish platforms in both the electromagnetic and acoustic domains, opening up new physics and applications, such as sensing, communication, and imaging, based on the unique capabilities of these advanced metamaterials. Beyond electromagnetic waves, he is also passionate about extending the principles of metamaterials to acoustic or elastic waves, and towards the quantum regime.
