Overview

John Kilpatrick holds an EPSRC DTP scholarship for his physics PhD at the University of Exeter researching imaging through scattering media.

In his masters, also at the University of Exeter, he studied Raman spectroscopy under the supervision of Nick Stone. The group was able to combine a deep Raman spectroscopy technique (SORS) with a fluorescence suppression technique (SERDS) for the first time. Raman spectroscopy, practically, means that if we have a laser and some sophisticated collection optics, by illuminating a sample, we get an optical barcode, unique to the chemical composition of the sample.

PhD research

Currently he is working in the structured light group led by Dave Phillips to develop techniques to image through multi-mode optical fibres using the latest advances in wavefront-shaping. By capturing and manipulating the flow of light, we can render arbitrary media transparent and solve real-world problems in photonics.

Exeter Photonics

John is the President of Exeter Photonics, a student run society funded by SPIE and Optica. The society runs outreach, industry visits, and socials. If you want us to visit your company or think we'd be good to help with your next outreach day get in touch.
