Dr Khurram Wadee
Senior Lecturer
Location: Harrison 157
Telephone: 01392 723654
Extension: (Streatham) 3654
I graduated from Imperial College with a first class Bachelor of Engineering degree in Civil Engineering in 1989. I then undertook research in the same department and got my doctorate in 1993. After three further years at Imperial I came to Exeter in 1995 as a lecturer. I became a senior lecturer in 2003. I am a Chartered Engineer, Chartered Mathematician and Chartered Scientist, a Member of the Institution of Structural Engineers and a Member of the Institute of Mathematics and Its Applications. I am the Programme Lead for Civil Engineering.
Research Interests
My research interests are in the application of the theory of elastic stability to structures i.e. nonlinear structural mechanics. In particular I am interested in the study of localized buckling patterns. Current research fronts include:
- Double-scale perturbations;
- Variational methods;
- Extensions to the Rayleigh-Ritz and Galerkin techniques;
- Application of solitary-wave-type solutions to structural problems;
- Multi-modal homoclinic solutions (multi-humped localizations as soliton interactions). Use of exponential asymptotics.
- Modelling of elastic tubes in bending: localization and kink formation.
- Wrinkling and pattern formation in thin elastic layers.
I would be interested in supervising Ph.D. studentships in any of the above areas and in particular the last few pertaining to the modelling of the buckling of graphene using novel analytical and numerical techniques.
