Senior Lecturer in Water Systems Engineering

Email:

Location: Hope Hall 1.20

Mohamad joined the University of Exeter in 2023 as a Senior Lecturer in Water Systems. Prior to that he was a senior lecturer and the MSc course leader at Teesside University. He delivered successful research projects while working at Cranfield University and the University of Sheffield.

Mohamad has a BEng in mechanical engineering from the University of Leeds, an MTech in Water Processes from Cranfield University and a PhD in Civil and Environmental engineering from the University of Bradford. He is a Chartered Engineer, a member of the Chartered Institute of Water and Environmental Management (MCIWEM) and a Chartered Water and Environmental Manager (C.WEM).

Research

Mohamad’s research focuses on reducing carbon emissions through heat recovery, particularly from sewer networks. He has special interest in improving the processes of heat recovery from large sewer networks.

Working previously with industrial partners, Mohamad has implemented some of his deterministic and predictive (data-driven) modelling techniques on a Belgian sewer network (managed by Aquafin) to simulate the heat recovery potential. He also advised local authorities (Kirklees Council) on effective techniques to enhance heat recovery applications.

Mohamad is interested in the water-energy-food nexus. He used various modelling techniques, including agent-based modelling, to quantify the interdependencies within the nexus. His other research interests lie around urban flooding and the development of smart systems to alleviate the urban flood risks.
