Overview

Dr Julian Ortiz is the Mark Cuifani / Anglo American Chair in Mining Innovation at Camborne School of Mines, where he focusses on geostatistics and predictive geometallurgy, developing algorithms for numerical modeling of geoscientific and mine production data to model the mineral resources and mining processes, predict performance and manage risk, associated to all stages of the extraction and processing of the materials mined.

Biography

He received a B.Sc. in Mining Engineering from Universidad de Chile (Chile), and completed a Ph.D. in Mining Engineering, specialising in Geostatistics, from University of Alberta (Canada). Subsequently, he worked at Universidad de Chile, where he became Head of Department and Deputy Director of the Advanced Mining Technology Center (AMTC). He founded the Advanced Laboratory for Geostatistical Supercomupting (ALGES) and led several large projects with public and private funding (CSIRO, BHP Billiton, Yamana Gold, AMTC, Innova, Fondecyt). He then moved to Queen's University in Ontario, Canada, where he was Associate Professor and Head of Department, and where he led the Predictive Geometallurgy and Geostatistics Lab. Dr Ortiz also founded Octal, a consulting company for specialised resource modeling in Chile, and the startup APMT in Canada, specialised on workflow automation and advanced algorithms in resource modeling and mine planning, where he is currently Director and Principal Consultant.
