Academic Profile

Dr Junning Chen is a senior lecturer in Biomechanics, with primary research interests in pathological changes of tissue structures and functionality, including osteoarthritis and bone resorption. The research programme combines multiscale bio-tissue imaging techniques (e.g. microCT, Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy, Synchrotron x-ray Scattering, etc.) and numerical techniques (e.g. reserve engineering modelling, finite element analysis, dynamic modelling, etc.), to explore the effects of mechanical factors on microscopic tissue response and nanoscopic cellular and extracellular matrix responses under healthy, pathological and clinically treated conditions. The knowledge gained from this combined ex-vivo and in-silico approaches will be further applied in developing new biomaterial/structure through morphological optimisation, advanced prototyping (CAD-CAM and 3D printing) and in-vivo evaluation. Currently, the ongoing projects include

1) Residual Ridge Resorption of Mandible induced by Denture Wearing

2) Ultrastructurral and Mechanical Changes in Cartilage Ageing and Degeneration

3) Interface Structure and Biomechanics at the Calvarial Sutures in Skull
