Andrew was appointed to the role in September 2013 and is the primary point of contact for research computing support for desktop, server and high performance computing (HPC) hardware and software running on Windows, Linux, Mac and other devices.

He also offers desktop support for Windows, UNIX/Linux and Mac applications and systems not covered by IT services and support in specialist areas such as embedded computing, data acquisition, GIS, image/data analysis, Matlab MDCS, parallel computing and programming/scripting.

Andrew holds a BEng Hons and MPhil in Materials Science and Engineering from University of Wales, Swansea and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from City University in London.  The PhD was sponsored by EPSRC / British Steel and resulted in seven research papers being published in Materials Science and Engineering, and the first primary author paper was awarded the Institute of Materials Williams Prize.

Before joining the ESI, Andrew worked as an IT Support Specialist at City University Business School while completing his PhD. On moving to Cornwall in 2001 he continued in an IT support role at Falmouth College of Arts and then Cornwall County Council before becoming an Assistant Database Administrator with additional responsibilities for the County‘s UNIX systems running the finance, human resource, education management and fire and rescue service databases. In 2006 Andrew joined the University of Exeter as a Research Computing Support Officer at the Penryn Campus supporting all aspects of technical computing.
