Modern Languages and Cultures Year Abroad Timeline

 

The timeline outlines the support that you can expect to receive as a Modern Languages and Cultures student going on a Year Abroad. The timeline covers the full four years of your degree programme and aims to achieve two goals. Firstly, it is intended to help you plan your Year Abroad. Secondly, it acts as a directory to further information through the website links included. Please select the arrows at the right-hand side of each section box for further information. 

Please note that precise dates and locations depend on both individual circumstances and external factors. The finalised dates and locations of the events and activities will be updated closer to the time and clearly communicated to you via email. 

 

Key activities, deadlines, events and presentations can be filtered according to the three Year Abroad options that are open to you: Study Abroad (University), Work Abroad (Internship) or British Council.

Information on the British Council Assistantship scheme and details on the application process.

Information on the opportunities and application process for working abroad.

Early November British Council Event British Council Ambassador Talk Arrow Down Arrow Up

This is an event where final year British Council Ambassadors give a talk to second years about the Language Assistant programme.

Mid December Study Deadline Study Abroad Application Deadline Arrow Down Arrow Up

This is the internal deadline for all applications to Study Abroad to be submitted. You are required to rank your preference of university and indicate the modules that you would like to take.

 Mid December Russia  Deadline  Russia Study Abroad Deadline Arrow Down

This is the internal deadline for Russian applications to Study Abroad to be submitted. You are required to rank your preference of university and indicate the modules that you would like to take.

Late January Study Activity Study Abroad Allocation Arrow Down Arrow Up

You are allocated to one of our partner universities. Allocation is ranked by availability of places and the grade average that you achieved in your first year. 

Mid February British Council Deadline British Council Application Deadline Arrow Down Arrow Up

This is the deadline for applying for a British Council placement

1st May Work Deadline Confirmation of First Semester Work Placement Arrow Down Arrow Up

This is the deadline for all students working abroad in the first semester to confirm their placement with the Placements team. 

March to May Study Deadline Partner University Applications Arrow Down Arrow Up

This is when you complete your applications directly to the university that you have been allocated abroad. That university will contact you directly to initiate the process. Each university had a different timescale.

March to June All Event Pre-departure Meetings Arrow Down Arrow Up

You are invited to attend a number of general and country-specific pre-departure meetings to help you prepare for your Year Abroad placement.

March to July All Activity Inform teams of any wellbeing issues  Arrow Down Arrow Up

If you have any wellbeing issues, you are encouraged to contact Wellbeing Services and contact us so you can be supported as closely as possible before and during your Year Abroad.

May to August British Council Activity British Council Placement Allocation Arrow Down Arrow Up

During the summer, from May to August, the British Council will contact you to confirm whether your application has been successfult and to inform you of your allocated placement.

           

 

June to September  All  Activity   Update iExeter Arrow Down Arrow Up

It is imperative that you update your contact information on your iExeter tab. The primary method of communication between Exeter and yourself during your Year Abroad will be through your Exeter email account.

Year 3

You need to return your signed Module Record formand any updated changes to the Outbound team for approval

Beginning of placement British Council Activity Return British Council Assistantship Documentation Arrow Down Arrow Up

You need to return your signed and stamped Certificate of Arrival to the Placements team.

All Year Study Activity Gaining University Credits Arrow Down Arrow Up

You must attend courses and undertake assessment at your host university adhering to the Modern Languages and Cultures Year Abroad requirements for students on SML3020 and SML3025.

May Work, British Council and Russia Deadline Submission of Reports and Portfolio to Exeter Arrow Down

For students on SML3010 or SML3025, completed Portfolios and Reflective Essays need to be submitted in May via BART, which can be accessed through your iExeter. See the Modern Langauges Year Abroad ELE page for more details of the assessment.

End of placement All Deadline Paperwork completion Arrow Down Arrow Up

On leaving your host university, British Council assistantship or work placement, you need to complete any outstanding placement paperwork and return it to the Outbound team (study) or Placements team (work).

End of placement Study Deadline Transcript of Studies Arrow Down Arrow Up

Before you leave your host university, you need to arrange for them to forward on a Transcript of Studies (list of modules taken, credit value and pass mark) to the Outbound team.

Welcome Week All Activity  Oral Examination Arrow Down Arrow Up

On the Thursday or Friday of Welcome Week (Freshers' Week) you will have an oral exam for your Modern Languages and Cultures Year Abroad module.

October All Event Year Abroad Returners Event Arrow Down Arrow Up

This is an event where you are able to celebrate your period abroad with other Year Abroad students

October Study Activity Transcript of Studies Receipt Arrow Down Arrow Up

Confirm with the Outbound team that your transcript of studies has been received.

Late November Study Activity Study Abroad Exam Board Arrow Down Arrow Up

The marks that you attain from your host university abroad are converted into their Exeter equivalent and approved by the Exam Board. For more information on how we convert your Study Abroad marks, please see the section on Assessment and Feedback section of the College Taught Handbook.

Late November / Early December All Activity Study Abroad Marks Released Arrow Down Arrow Up

After all your separate marks have been collated and the Study Abroad Exam Board has met, your results for the Year Abroad will be released via SRS.
