Module description


Students taking this module live and work abroad for an entire academic year: they use one or more work placements to improve their knowledge of foreign cultures and languages and to gain skills that equip them better for the international job market. They are encouraged to think about the intercultural competence and the employability skills that they acquire during their year abroad and about the process with which they improve their knowledge of foreign languages. (Given the difficulty to obtain a work visa, students of Russian taking SML3010 live and study in Russia, and are assessed on their return to Exeter).


Module aims

1. To enhance the student's awareness of the process of foreign-language acquisition and to develop
strategies for more effective learning
2. To develop the student's intercultural awareness and competence through reflection on the experience
of living, working and studying abroad
3. To enhance the student's ability to manage her/his own learning and to develop independent learning
4. To enhance the student's capacity for self-assessment through structured reflection on her/his
5. To maximize the benefits of studying and working abroad by the transference of the student's new skills
to both his/her academic and professional careers
6. To increase the student's employability in an increasingly competitive international market
7. To develop the student's awareness of her/his potential as a global citizen

ILO: Module-specific skills

  • 1. Describe the workings of an educational institution or other workplace in the country of the student's target language
  • 2. Use the appropriate grammatical structures and vocabulary in the target language to analyse her/his experience and to respond precisely to a specific brief both in writing and orally
  • 3. Describe the current sustainability issues in the country of the target language
  • 4. Demonstrate knowledge and application of the attitudes and qualities that are required to function well in a foreign work environment
  • 5. Give oral presentations and/or write reports in a work environment
  • 6. Use appropriately a wide vocabulary specific to the work environment

ILO: Discipline-specific skills

  • 7. Critically evaluate the process of independent learning by reflection on and evaluation of the experience of working and learning abroad
  • 8. Demonstrate the confident use of different language registers appropriate to different situations (e.g. the appropriate use of formal or familiar forms of address; the appropriate choice of verb forms and vocabulary in written reports)
  • 9. Demonstrate an increased linguistic sophistication, in terms of both expression and knowledge, that will enhance the student's performance in final-year written and oral language work
  • 10. Identify and describe an awareness of appropriate behaviour and dress codes in the host country
  • 11. Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the culture of the host country
  • 12. Demonstrate a sensitivity to the host country so as to function as an integrated member of its society

ILO: Personal and key skills

  • 13. Learn and self-assess independently, and draw up an action plan for development of her/his skills
  • 14. Develop strategies to cope with problems in the workplace or those brought about by having to adapt to an unfamiliar environment
  • 15. Identify and describe strategies for adapting to working practices in a foreign country, compare and reflect critically on those in her/his own country
  • 16. Reflect on positive and negative experiences in order to prepare herself/himself for the workplace and therefore be better placed to obtain graduate-level employment and be an asset to a future employer
  • 17. Demonstrate a level of intercultural competence that will prepare the student for employment in any foreign country

Syllabus plan

The module has 3 stages:
1. Year 2 Preparation for residence, employment and study abroad, audit of linguistic, intercultural and
employability skills plus environmental awareness.
2. Year 3 Completion of a formative portfolio, demonstrating the achievement of the learning outcomes.
3. Completion of 4 essays (amounting to 2,000 words) and an assessed presentation in the target
language, reflecting on the experience of working or studying abroad

Indicative learning resources - Basic reading

The course materials contain detailed instructions about how to complete vocabulary sheets and
reflective reports.

 Students are not given a bibliography with prescribed secondary texts, BUT in order to improve
their linguistic and cultural competence they are required to read widely in the target language
and engage with all types of media (e.g. serious and light literature and journalism, TV, radio,
film, internet).

Foreign Language Centre modules 2020/21

Term 1 module codes listed above ending with C, i.e. FLF1115C, are only available to outbound students who are away in Term 2. Students studying all year must select the standard module across both Term 1 and 2.
