Module description
French Advanced 3 is intended for students with a very high level of French (‘A’ Level or equivalent + 2 years) and who may have spent a recent period of study or work in a country where French is spoken (e.g. on a ‘with European Study’ pathway). This module is broadly equivalent to C1 Proficient User of the Common European Framework for languages. The module is taught in French.

Module aims
The module is appropriate for students who have spent a period of study / work in a country where the language is spoken (such as students on a with European Study programme) and/or have completed Advanced level courses. This module is broadly equivalent to C1 / C2V Proficient User of the Common European Framework for languages, and aims to: review and consolidate advanced structures and vocabulary of the target language, thus equipping students with the linguistic tools to enable them to communicate effectively in everyday and academic situations further develop and embed active and passive language skills, including comprehension skills in listening and reading, with particular emphasis placed on the skills necessary for effective oral and written communication in the target language at an advanced level build on knowledge of the socio-cultural aspects of the regions/countries in which the languages are spoken and to continue to develop transferable skills necessary for living and/or working abroad
ILO: Module-specific skills
- 1. Demonstrate consistent grammatical control of complex language and structures of the target language
- 2. Read, comprehend and summarise a wide range of demanding, longer written and aural texts in most registers on a range of topics in the target language, including articles and reports concerned with current affairs in which the writers adopt particular attitudes and viewpoints
- 3. Communicate confidently, very fluently and precisely in range of situations, both orally and in writing, and demonstrate the ability to research a specialist topic, extracting and summarising key information from a range of written and spoken sources, and produce a written portfolio of material to a high professional standard

- 4. Demonstrate advanced levels of autonomy in language learning, with minimal direction from the teacher
- 5. Use available learning aids in a variety of media, including a specialist dictionary, to consolidate their learning

- 6. Make presentations on a range of concrete and abstract subjects and be able to express themselves confidently, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning in more complex situations
- 7. Work creatively and flexibly with others as part of a team, reacting to situations as appropriate
- 8. Make progress through developing skills of self-study and application and develop an awareness of and sensitivity to a foreign culture.
Syllabus plan
The module provides a systematic approach to acquiring essential grammar structures in a communicative context and in accordance with the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. It covers the following grammar / topics: Main grammar At this level, students are expected to demonstrate competence in the use of all advanced grammatical structures. However, there may be remedial revision / consolidation of grammar during the module as required. Main Topics Sustainability, environmentalism and renewable energy Digital Society (technology, social networking, etc) French regions: geography and economic activity General overview of French economy Consumer society Poverty and exclusion New trends: birth rate, marriage, ageing population French Politics: Constitution, institutions, parties French modern culture (cinema, music etc) Current affairs and press reviews Role of science and technology in modern society French gastronomy, Food & Drink
