Module description

This module will build on your existing knowledge of Latin. It will increase your fluency in reading whole Latin texts and strengthen your linguistic abilities. You will focus on studying a main set text in each term and supplementary and supporting texts which will be complemented with classes dedicated to language and syntax work.

Module aims

  • To study set texts, Latin language work and the practice of literary criticism together in a single integrated module.
  • To prepare you for the study of Latin language and literature at a more advanced level.

  • 1. Demonstrate a solid grasp of Latin language both through translation from and into Latin and through the close study of number of prose and verse texts.

  • 2. Identify, describe and manipulate a range of linguistic forms and structures
  • 3. Interpret and critically analyse works from an advanced literary culture of an earlier era

ILO: Personal and key skills

  • 4. Interpret the meaning of complex, demanding texts and apply linguistic skills
  • 5. Demonstrate advanced independent study skills, as well as the ability to work in groups in literary discussion and in working on translation and grammar

Syllabus plan

Whilst the content may vary from year to year, it is envisioned each week the 3 classes will be divided as appropriate between the following:

  • Close reading pre-prepared sections of the set text and tackling difficult passages
  • Discussing key themes of the set text, beta texts and secondary literature
  • Practising unseen translation, including the related “beta texts” and tackling advanced grammar issues

An overview of the class schedules will be discussed at the start of each term, and guidance will be provided about the required preparation for each class.

Re-assessment notes

Deferral – if you miss an assessment for certificated reasons judged acceptable by the Mitigation Committee, you will normally be either deferred in the assessment or an extension may be granted. The mark given for a re-assessment taken as a result of deferral will not be capped and will be treated as it would be if it were your first attempt at the assessment.

Referral – if you have failed the module overall (i.e. a final overall module mark of less than 40%) you will be required to submit a further assessment as necessary. If you are successful on referral, your overall module mark will be capped at 40%.

  • Two texts, to be confirmed by the module tutor. You will be given a list of beta texts to be read in conjunction with these works by the lecturer.
