Module description

This module will provide you with an introduction to the Latin language. By the end of the year you will be able to read passages of text without assistance, enabling you to proceed to higher-level Latin classes. You will develop your understanding of Roman ways of thought and expression, which will give you an insight into the various aspects of the ancient world presented in your other modules. You will work both individually and in groups. This module is suitable for beginners; you do not require prior knowledge of Latin.

Module aims

This module aims to give students with little or no previous experience of Latin an understanding of the basic grammar, syntax, and vocabulary of the language. By the end of the year you should be able to read easy passages without assistance. By acquiring first-hand experience of the language of the Romans, you will gain additional insight to complement the various aspects of the ancient world presented in your other modules.

  • 2. Know enough Latin to translate easy passages accurately without assistance
  • 3. Demonstrate a good enough foundation in grammar, syntax, and vocabulary to be able to proceed to higher-level Latin classes with confidence

Re-assessment notes

Deferral – if you miss an assessment for certificated reasons judged acceptable by the Mitigation Committee, you will normally be either deferred in the assessment or an extension may be granted. The mark given for a re-assessment taken as a result of deferral will not be capped and will be treated as it would be if it were your first attempt at the assessment.

Referral – if you have failed the module overall (i.e. a final overall module mark of less than 40%) you will be required to submit a further assessment as necessary. If you are successful on referral, your overall module mark will be capped at 40%.
