6.3   DEGREE CONVENTIONS FOR MA AND DIPLOMA PROGRAMMES AND ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

This section gives you the formal conventions that the Taught Faculty lays down for all MA programmes. They include the criteria on which your work will be assessed. The conventions constitute the basic terms upon which degrees are awarded, so it is important that you read them carefully. If there is anything you do not understand, ask the Director of your MA Programme.

Marking Schemes and Standards

• The dissertation may not be submitted until all the taught course work has been passed.

• Examiners should assess performance under the general headings of (i) overall knowledge of the subject, (ii) critical use of primary and secondary sources, (iii) any other skills particular to the discipline. Marks for individual taught course elements and the dissertation are awarded according to the following scheme, and examiners should bear in mind that, even when marking work arising from modules also taken by undergraduates, the expectation of postgraduate candidates is of a different order:
