International PG and Early Career Researcher Drama Conference, University of Exeter, Thursday 30 and Friday 31 January 2014

The University of Exeter’s Drama Department is pleased to announce Obligations in Contemporary Theatre and Performance Practices, a conference for Drama International PG and Early Career Researchers.  Ranked 4th in The Times Good University Guide 2013, Drama at Exeter is an internationally-renowned centre for practice and research.  This conference offers an excellent opportunity for Drama International PG and Early Career Researchers to present their work and create networks in a supportive, but rigorous environment.

This conference proposes that theatre and performance ask us to explore the world that we live within, consider it in all its nuances, and imagine it in all its possibility.  But this exploration comes with certain responsibilities and obligations that we are required to consider as academics and theatre practitioners.  We must question what happens when we meet within the theatre/performance space and how it relates to the world around us. This conference asks what the duties, responsibilities and obligations of all those who meet within the theatre/performance space are, provocatively querying the ways in which theatre and performance matter.

The conference will explore the field of contemporary theatre and performance from the early 1990s to the present day.  This will include two strands: a consideration of contemporary theatre and performance; as well as training practices and pedagogies. We are interested in various forms of performance ranging from 'traditional' script based work, to more 'experimental' forms, such as immersive, new-media and one-on-one performance, site-specific work and physical theatre.

Paper acceptance will be announced on or before Monday 23 September 2013.  The conference will begin with a keynote speaker and dinner on the evening of Thursday 30 January to be followed by a full day of papers on Friday 31 January.
