Humanities Writing Mentoring Scheme

The Humanities Writing Mentoring Scheme offers one-hour one-to-one appointments for students who would like assistance with their writing in a specific essay or essays.

It is aimed at anyone who feels his or her writing is not as good as it could be, any student who has received feedback on a given essay that suggests they try to improve their writing, or any student who would like to go over and improve a draft of an essay.

You may sign up for an appointment with a writing mentor (a postgraduate research student), who will work through an essay with you, addressing its problems and explaining how to fix them for this essay and future essays. You are welcome to return for another appointment to consider a revised version of an essay, or to consider another essay. The writing mentors can also help you with specific grammatical problems or confusions over punctuation.

The Humanities Writing Mentor Scheme is available throughout Term 2

Important information

  • The writing mentors cannot assist with specific support for English as a Foreign Language. However, this support is provided via INTO's Insessional Programme.
  • The writing mentors cannot proofread work (although they can give you guidance on how to proofread your own work).
  • The writing mentors provide support with your writing, rather than discipline-specific content.
  • At the end of your appointments you will be asked to fill out an anonymous evaluation sheet, so that we can improve the programme as it progresses.
  • Open to Undergraduate and Postgraduate (taught) students from the College of Humanities.

How to book

You can book a maximum of 3 appointments with a writing mentor during the term. You should always book with the same writing mentor wherever possible. Please complete one appointment before booking the next one.

All bookings should be made via the dedicated page on My Career Zone, which also includes details of how to cancel any appointments should you need to.

A new scheme

This is a new scheme that we hope will be of benefit to you. We hope it will continue for future years and encourage you to make frequent use of it.
