DESCRIPTION - summary of the module content

The vast majority of IT systems within business are involved with the collection, processing and movement of data.   Data relating to transactions, customer behaviour and business activities must be stored and processed to deliver useful business information.  This module will provide you with the skills required to create and manage efficient networks and databases and to write intelligent queries to deliver useful business information from the collected data.

AIMS - intentions of the module

The aim of the module is to cover theoretical and technical issues underlying current and future information systems including network structures, databases and three-level architectures.

On successful completion of this module you should be able to:

Module Specific Skills and Knowledge

1.distinguish between and give examples of  the different types of information systems;
2. distinguish between the different types of networks and their applications;
3. produce a database design and demonstrate how it can be managed.
4. use SQL to query the database
5. develop and implement a three-level architecture with the use of PHP.

6.express designs at different levels of abstraction and mapping between them;
7. design a three-level architecture.
 

Personal and Key Transferable / Employment Skills and Knowledge

8.use on-line resources to develop advanced computer language skills.
9. communicate technical information using a written report.

Data security within a network

Types of database

Information modelling: database design and management, and mapping to SQL.

Three-level architecture.
