Annual Meeting of Postgraduates in the Reception of the Ancient World, University of Exeter, 5-6 December

This year, the University of Exeter will host the third Annual Meeting of Postgraduates in the Reception of the Ancient World 2013 Conference. Following the success of AMPRAW Conferences held at the University College London in 2011 and the University of Birmingham in 2012, AMPRAW 2013 will provide postgraduate students, from a variety of disciplines, with the opportunity to present their research to an increasingly popular Classical Reception academic community.

The central themes of AMPRAW2013 are the reception of the ancient world in film, translation and theatre.  Highlights of the exciting events schedule will include:

  • Keynote addresses by Professor Edith Hall (King’s College London), Dr Christopher Stray (Swansea), and Professor Maria Wyke (UCL)
  • A silent film screening of the incomplete 1914 Italian Spartacus, accompanied by Stephen Horne, an internationally renowned silent film accompanist and composer
  • A classical reception themed dramatic performance followed by a question and answer session with the actors and director
  • An interactive exhibition on the history of classical reception in cinema hosted by The Bill Douglas Centre for the History of Cinema and Popular Culture
  • A discursive workshop on classical reception and translation
  • An opportunity to relax and socialise at the conference dinner in the historic and beautiful city centre of Exeter
