AIMS - intentions of the module
The module provides specialist analysis and design skills associated with civil, geotechnical, environmental and related industries. The module provides problem-solving skills and provides simulated industrial experience.
INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES (ILOs) (see assessment section below for how ILOs will be assessed)
SYLLABUS PLAN - summary of the structure and academic content of the module
Week 1 Introduction; Shear strength review; Stereographic analysis and interpretation Plane failure and circular failure. Week 2 Plane failure. Slope stability overview; Use of DIPS software; Probability and risk in slope design Assignment: Slope design. Week 3 Circular failure; Composition and characteristics of explosives Week 4 Program Slide, non-circular and infinite slope failures; Electronic and non-electric detonating systems; Misfires Week 5 Wedge failure, program Swedge. Blasting regulations and safety Week 6 Blast design. Optimum blast specifications, including geometry.
