AIMS - intentions of the module
An advanced course covering aspects of hydropower resource estimation, turbine design, deployment, economics and environmental impact with a focus on wave and tidal energy technologies.

SYLLABUS PLAN - summary of the structure and academic content of the module
1. Review of Year 1/2 materials on: Wave Energy, Tidal Power, Hydropower. 2. Wave Resource Investigation & Assessment I, Wave height sensors, Calculation of wave spectra, Statistical moments of spectra 3. Wave Resource Investigation & Assessment II: Sources of data, Spectral models, Scatter diagrams. 4. Tidal Resource Assessment I: Tide theory, Harmonic constants, Effects of estuaries. 5. Construction processes for Marine Renewable Energy: Construction practice, Case studies. Introduction to SWAN: Grid definitions, Physical properties, Boundary conditions, Initial conditions, File formats, Output 6. Wave Energy Converters I: Shoreline devices, Limpet, WaveShaft. 7. Tidal Resource Assessment II: Velocity / Current Scatter diagrams, Calculation of annual output of free stream turbines. 8. Tidal current modelling: Production of time series of tidal current speed versus velocity from tidal flow models. 9. Tidal current turbines: Vertical axis tidal current turbines, Horizontal axis tidal current turbines, Tidal fences. 10. Wave Energy Converters II: Nearshore devices, Anchoring arrangements, Environmental Impacts 11. Environmental Impacts: Installation, Operations, Decommissioning, Offshore devices.
