MODULE CODECSM2277 MODULE CONVENERProf Lars Johanning (Coordinator)
DURATION: TERM 1 2 3
DURATION: WEEKS
Number of Students Taking Module (anticipated)
DESCRIPTION - summary of the module content
AIMS - intentions of the module
The aims of this module are to inform students of the strength, failure and safety of structural components used by industry and to provide a basis for the development of an understanding of complex stresses and strains arising in elastic and non-elastic systems.
INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES (ILOs) (see assessment section below for how ILOs will be assessed)
SYLLABUS PLAN - summary of the structure and academic content of the module
Week 1 An introduction to failure; fracture, fatigue and creep Week 2 Stress concentration factors and elements of elastic design. Safety factors. Week 3 Struts: elementary strut theory and its limitations; use of British Standards; Perry Robertson method. Week 4 Stress analysis and measurement: analysis of plane stress and strain systems. Hook’s Law; Pressure stresses in thin, thick and compound thick cylinders. . Week 5 Beams: slope and deflection of statically determinate and indeterminate beams; composite beams; bending stress Week 6 Principal and maximum shear stresses in beams; general two-dimensional stress systems Week 7 Use of strain gauge rosettes and other methods of strain measurement. Week 8 Elastic Failure: theories of elastic failure; comparison of theories. Week 9 Non-elastic behaviour: plastic bending, plastic hinges and shape factors; linear and non-linear viscoelasticity
