AIMS - intentions of the module
The aim of this module is to provide the students with an introduction to field geology skills including, description of a wide range of lithologies, recording structural data, and techniques of mapping in an upland area.
INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES (ILOs) (see assessment section below for how ILOs will be assessed)
SYLLABUS PLAN - summary of the structure and academic content of the module
Safety in the field; use of the compass-clinometer to locate oneself; measurement of planar and linear structural features including bedding, joints, cleavage, faults and fold axes; recognition, description and interpretation of a range of lithologies; defining mappable units at the scale of survey, outcrop and feature mapping; use of traverses and boundary mapping; plotting geological data on to a base map; introduction to underground geological mapping.
