An introductory course covering a wide spectrum of alternative energy sources.
INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES (ILOs) (see assessment section below for how ILOs will be assessed)
SYLLABUS PLAN - summary of the structure and academic content of the module
Overview :- History of energy usage, forms of energy, present energy consumption, environmental problems (Week 1) Solar thermal energy:- Solar radiation, energy balance through glass, passive and active solar heating, solar concentrators. (Week 2) Solar photovoltaics:- Basic PV operation, electrical characteristics, case studies relating to developing countries (Week 3) Biomass:- Definitions, wood as fuel, extracting biomass energy, fuel crops, anaerobic digestion, landfill gas, waste to energy, energy balances and economics. (Week 4) Hydroelectricity:- Resource estimation, history of hydropower, turbines, large and small scale systems, pumped storage, economics. (Week 5) Tidal Power:- Basic physics, tidal resources, system operation, environmental factors, financial discounting. (Week 6) Wind energy:- World wind circulation, quantifying wind resource, aerodynamics, site investigation, environmental impact (Week 7) Wave energy:- Basic physics, problems of quantifying resource, shore and off-shore based wave energy extraction systems. (Week 8) Geothermal energy:- Basic physics, resource quantification, rock permeability, volcanic based systems, HDR sytems, case study-the CSM HDR geothermal energy project, geothermal heat pumps. (Week 9)
