AIMS - intentions of the module
The module aims to extend the work encountered in CSM1027 and covers a range of engineering maths topics. The module includes an introduction to the software package MathCad.
INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES (ILOs) (see assessment section below for how ILOs will be assessed)
SYLLABUS PLAN - summary of the structure and academic content of the module
Week 1 Elementary theory of matrices; elementary theory of determinants; solution of equations. Week 2 Complex numbers. Week 3 Elementary vector theory and applications. Week 4 Numerical integration; e.g. Simpsonâ€™s rule Week 5 Probability distributions: Binomial, Poisson, & Normal. Week 6 Sampling theory; standard error; Confidence intervals. Week 6 Statistical hypothesis testing; Chi-squared test for association; Linear correlation & regression. Week 7 Further differentiation; rules, inverse functions, use of tables/ applications. Newton-Raphson. Week 8&9 Integration (i) by substitution; (ii) by partial fractions; (iii) by parts / Engineering applications MathCAD: Graphs: drawing, finding gradients and areas under curves. Variables and functions; linking together, defining variable ranges. Entering formulae, changing the subject of a formula. Introduction to assignment problem.
