AIMS - intentions of the module
An introductory course introducing concepts of energy and renewable energy sources.
INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES (ILOs) (see assessment section below for how ILOs will be assessed)
SYLLABUS PLAN - summary of the structure and academic content of the module
Week 1: History of energy usage, forms of energy, present energy consumption, environmental problems Week 2: Conventional energy sources: energy and power; fossil fuel and nuclear, the grid Week 3: Solar thermal energy:- Solar radiation resource, passive and active solar heating, solar concentrators. Solar photovoltaics:- Basic PV operation, PV technologies, electrical characteristics Week 4: Biomass:- Definitions, biomass resource, extracting biomass energy, fuel crops, anaerobic digestion, landfill gas, waste to energy, energy balances and economics. Week 5: Field trip Week 6: Hydroelectricity:- the resource, hydropower power equation, turbines, large and small scale systems, pumped storage, Week 7: Tidal Power:- The tides, tidal resource, system operation, environmental factors Week 8: Wind energy:- generation of the winds, wind resource, basic aerodynamics (lift versus drag) and the fundamental power equation; fundamental design concepts. Week 9: Wave energy: The wave resource, the fundamental power equation; onshore and off-shore wave energy extraction systems. Week 10: Geothermal energy:- Basic physics, resource quantification, rock permeability, volcanic based systems, HDR sytems, case study-the CSM HDR geothermal energy project, geothermal heat pumps.
