AIMS - intentions of the module
This module aims to; a) consolidate key mathematical principles and methods in the areas of algebra, trigonometry, calculus and basic statistics; and b) introduce essential IT systems and software.

SYLLABUS PLAN - summary of the structure and academic content of the module
Week 1 Fundamental Algebra I: incl. Factorisation, Binomial expansions, Transposition of formulae. Week 2 The Exponential constant and Natural logarithms; Laws of Indices. Week 3 Simple functions, associated graphs, plotting; Linear laws Week 4 Equations and their solution; Inequalities. Week 5 Basic Area and Trig.; the ratios,degrees. Circles/ Rads.Recip.ratios. Basic trig identities. Sine and Cosine Rules. Solution of practical triangle problems.3-D trigonometry. Week 6 Basic Stats. I: Frequency Distributions,Histograms, Mean, Median, Mode & Standard Deviation. Week 7 Basic Probability: Binomial distribution; Poisson distribution; Normal distribution. Sampling theory; standard error; Confidence intervals (Intro.) / Statistical hypothesis testing. Week 8 Introduction to Differentiation; Stationary values; Optimisation. Week 9 Introduction to Integration/ Dimensional analysis. Week 10 Final topic tutorial and module review. IT: Intro to student IT systems, Intro to Word, Powerpoint and Excel, Excel exercises
