DESCRIPTION - summary of the module content

This module provides an opportunity to examine an area of classic European geology famous for both its tectonics and mining history. The destination varies but will typically be Spain, Cyprus or Portugal. In the field, you will you learn about the regional geological evolution of the area and the nature and origin of its mineral resources. You will undertake independent geological mapping and group work to assess the geological evolution of the area. As part of your work, you will be examining geotechnical aspects, which may include the determination of rock strength, fracturing behaviour, and potential failure mechanisms; evaluate appropriate excavation methods relevant to resource extraction; evaluate strategies relating to minimising risks related to climate and weather, seismic activity, soil properties, ground water, or other conditions relevant to construction and extractive developments in the relevant destination areas.

To participate in this module, you need to have completed Year 1 and 2 of BSc/MGeol Engineering Geology and Geotechnics (or equivalent). This module is not suitable for non-specialist students or interdisciplinary pathways.

AIMS - intentions of the module

The aim of this module is to develop an integrated approach to engineering geology in the field. This module brings together subject areas that have been taught during the first, second and third year of the study programme, including applied geological techniques, field mapping and notebook skills.

On successful completion of this module, you should be able to:

Module Specific Skills and Knowledge:

1 Describe and evaluate geological field data in the context of taught geological models and mining, geotechnical and environmental considerations;

2 Undertake geological field investigations in a responsible and safe manner;

3 Apply, analyse, and interpret lithological, structural and geotechnical data in an interdisciplinary context;

4 Critically evaluate and synthesize results using appropriate quantitative and qualitative techniques.;

5 Collect, synthesize, and critically evaluate observations in an interdisciplinary framework and to present results in a professional format;

6 Gain an appreciation of how different branches of the geosciences fit together;

7 Apply self- and time-management skills in individual and group working situations;

8 Identify individual and collective goals and responsibilities in small groups;

9 Recognise and respect different views during group work;

10 Evaluate performance as group members;

11 Write technical reports using the proper format, background literature, and referencing.

SYLLABUS PLAN - summary of the structure and academic content of the module

Desk Study (to be carried out prior to the fieldtrip):

1 Literature study and online quiz (individual) in preparation for the field activities.

Field Activities:

1 Observation and description of regional geology, climatic conditions, vegetation and soil cover of a field area; description and evaluation of logistical aspects and risks important to construction or extractive operations (group);

2 Production of a geological map and cross sections; descriptions of lithological, structural, and alteration features; assessment and evaluation of the geological and geotechnical context of a delineated construction area or mineral resource (individual);

3 Geotechnical assessment and resource estimation (group);

4 Mine design (group).
