Professional Accreditation of Programmes (Geology)

The College has worked together with many industrial partners both in collaborative research and consultancy. Many of our undergraduate and taught postgraduate programmes are accredited by a range of professional institutions.

A list of the College's accredited degree programmes in Geology, and the associated accrediting Professional Institution is provided below. Note that some degree programmes will be under application for accreditation; if you are unsure of the accredited status of your degree programme, please contact the Accreditation Team.

For programmes accredited by the Geological Society, a degree in an accredited programme will normally qualify the holder for admission to Fellowship of the Society and for the award of Chartered Geologist (CGeol) status after a specified period of professional development and relevant experience. Accredited status provides added assurance to prospective students that a department's teaching is of the highest quality, and has been approved by an independent body of academics and industrialists. Accreditation is awarded for a maximum of 6 years under each assessment exercise. The dates applicable to the current accreditation of these degree programmes can be viewed on the Geological Society list of accredited degrees: www.geolsoc.org.uk

The Institution of Materials, Minerals and Mining accredits the MSc in Applied Geotechnics under licence from the UK regulator, the Engineering Council, as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for a Chartered Engineer (CEng) for candidates who have already acquired an Accredited CEng (Partial) BEng (Hons) undergraduate first degree. Accreditation is a mark of assurance that the degree meets the standards set by the Engineering Council in the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC).  Accreditation is awarded for a maximum of 5 years under each assessment exercise. The dates applicable to the current accreditation of this degree programme can be viewed on the Engineering Council list of accredited degrees: www.engc.org.uk .

Students are strongly encouraged to join the Professional Institution that accredits their pogramme of study; student membership normally attracts a reduced fee, or is free. For further information, refer to Student Membership.
