AIMS - intentions of the module
To investigate the use of 3 dimensional Computer Aided Engineering Design tools for a variety of engineering applications. To utilise advanced CAE software to produce 3D engineering designs and Finite element analyses. To understand the operational principes underlying CAE Design software and its application.

SYLLABUS PLAN - summary of the structure and academic content of the module
Main thematic areas include: 1. Advanced CAD modeling with SolidWorks. 2. 3D CAD: History, development, theory and application 3. Behind the GUI: An overview of the mathematics behind the interface (Splines, NURBS, rendering, etc) 4. CAD to FEA: The practical application of 3D data for advanced engineering analysis 5. Front-End Inputs: Beyond the mouse – Reverse engineering, Point Cloud Data, GIS, how other data sources feed CAD. 6. Outputs: Using and Reusing the data - Rapid prototyping, digital prototypes, hyper-real imaging. 7. The practical application of Finite Elements Analysis within the CAE environment.
