AIMS - intentions of the module
The purpose of this module is to develop subject-specific knowledge, understanding and skills, required to design and analyse modern-day communication systems. The module develops the signal and system theory framework necessary to understand the operating and performance-limits of analog and digital communication systems, then goes on to apply such theory to real-world communications examples such as analog and digital radio, fibre-optic communications, wireless systems.

Eleven teaching weeks as follows 1. Overview of a typical communications system 2. Signals and spectra; Fourier theory 3. Linear time invariant systems; impulse response and frequency response 4. Discrete time signals and systems 5. The Discrete Fourier Transform and the FFT 6. Baseband pulse and digital signalling 7. Baseband pulse and digital signalling 8. Bandpass signalling 9. Analog and digital radio systems 10. Wireless signalling 11. Optical fibre communications systems
