To develop an awareness of principal engineering materials, their fabrication and technical/economic considerations. This will serve as a basis for further study later in the course.

Materials: mechanical properties of materials and how they arise. Lifecycle issues: Manufacture, use and disposal/reuse/recycling of materials. Manufacturing: Microstructure of materials, how microstructure is changed during manufacture and how this affects properties. Economics and sustainability in materials and manufacturing. 1. Polymers. Properties and processes. 2. Metals. Properties and processes. 3. Composites. Properties and processes. 4. Ceramics. glass and new materials. Properties and processes.
