DESCRIPTION - summary of the module content

The development and management of large-scale IT systems, such as the NHS patient record system, is a difficult and often high profile undertaking. This module will provide you with a thorough understanding of the technical and management implications for organisations of planning, designing, acquiring, implementing and using large-scale IT systems. Cases will be presented through traditional and guest lectures and through student presentations; these presentations will also allow you to develop your independent research skills. You will also undertake a substantial team project as part of this module to reinforce your understanding of implementation issues and team working skills.

 

AIMS - intentions of the module

The ITMB Case Studies module aims to provide you with a thorough understanding of the technical and management implications for organisations of planning, designing, acquiring, implementing and using large- scale IT systems.
 

INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES (ILOs) (see assessment section below for how ILOs will be assessed)

On successful completion of this module, you should be able to:

Module Specific Skills and Knowledge:
1 demonstrate an understanding of the challenges associated with planning, designing, acquiring, implementing and using large scale IT systems in the public and private sectors;
2 show an appreciation of the decision making processes associated with the implementation and management of IT-based systems;
3 explain the importance of IT systems in large organisations and the context in which they operate;
4 identify opportunities for IT within a business and determine the cost/benefit to the company of implementing such a system.
Discipline Specific Skills and Knowledge:
5 work as part of a team, assigning roles to each member according to skill-set;
6 develop plans for the implementation of IT systems in an organisation.
Personal and Key Transferable / Employment Skills and Knowledge:
7 work effectively as a member of a team to research and plan solutions to challenging IT problems;
8 critically evaluate the management and implementation of existing IT systems;
9 concisely present information in a semi-formal setting.
