DESCRIPTION - summary of the module content

For this module, you will put into practice the knowledge that you have acquired from the taught elements of the programme, and will participate in challenging professional IT work in an organisational setting where you will acquire new and complementary knowledge. Where possible, the module will be taken as a placement in a business or government organisation, providing you with experience of working as an IT professional within a modern organisation and dealing with the challenges and opportunities therein.  Responsibility for finding the placement lies with you, but support will be provided by the College's Employability Officer.

AIMS - intentions of the module

The Business IT Project module will allow you to participate in challenging professional IT work in an organisational setting. The module will ideally be undertaken as a placement at the host organisation’s place of work, with academic assessment taking place during and after the placement.

INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES (ILOs) (see assessment section below for how ILOs will be assessed)

On successful completion of this module, you should be able to:

Module Specific Skills and Knowledge:
1 demonstrate deep understanding of the challenges associated with implementing, operating and using information systems in the public and private sectors;
2 identify and agree tasks to be performed in the project;
3 carry out the agreed tasks systematically and competently;
4 critically analyse the nature, quality and impact of IT work performed by yourself and others;
5 understand the impact of information systems on the business.
Discipline Specific Skills and Knowledge:
6 plan and manage your own work effectively;
7 understand the costs and benefits of the project to the business;
8 communicate with others effectively.
Personal and Key Transferable / Employment Skills and Knowledge:
9 work effectively as a member of team to design and implement IT-based solutions to challenging business problems;
10 present effectively the work undertaken to a lay audience;
11 write a concise report describing the work involved in the project.
