DESCRIPTION - summary of the module content

On this module, you will work in teams of approximately eight, conducting research on a mathematical problem that may be related to a variety of areas. The research will be assessed by report and presentations. You will extensively enhance key skills deemed desirable by employers, such as communication and project management.

AIMS - intentions of the module

The module aims to give you an opportunity to: work as part of a team under the tutorage of an expert in a chosen field in preparation for future employability; conduct research on an open mathematical problem; and extensively enhance key skills, such as communication and project management.

INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES (ILOs) (see assessment section below for how ILOs will be assessed)

On successful completion of this module, you should be able to:

 

Module Specific Skills and Knowledge:

1 work independently and creatively on a substantial piece of work in an area of the mathematical sciences of your own particular interest;

2 work as part of a team to formulate and solve open-ended problems in mathematics.

Discipline Specific Skills and Knowledge:

3 communicate results and methodology effectively in writing;

4 present your work orally to an audience of varied expertise and background.

Personal and Key Transferable/ Employment Skills and  Knowledge:

5 formulate and plan a detailed project proposal;

6 evaluate the contributions of themselves and others towards the project, and adherence to plan;

7 strengthen IT, research and team working skills;

8 articulate increased knowledge and application of key employability skills.

SYLLABUS PLAN - summary of the structure and academic content of the module
Weekly contact time with the project adviser will be scheduled. Additionally, some material will be developed in lectures as follows:
 
- overview of module and projects available;
 
-  project planning and time management;
 
- report writing;
 
- effective oral communication

RE-ASSESSMENT NOTES

Reassessment will be by a single piece of coursework only. For deferred candidates, the mark will be uncapped. For referred candidates the mark will be capped at 40%.
